The NEFGA has a "contest" at each meeting called a bowl show where club members that are IFGA judges judge the fish and exhibitors learn what makes a winner a winner. Not all members bring fish but those that do have a chance to win the year end point total and have their name engraved on a plaque beside the name of previous annual winners. (See History). The annual winner gets the plaque to take home for that year (aka the Guppy Stanley Cup). There is an "open" class, "novice" class and a "junior" class (those under 16 years of age). Any annual total point winner of the novice class becomes ineligible for future novice class entries. From then on they are only eligable to show in the "open" class. The top 4 entries in each category (open male, open tank, novice male, novice tank, open female, novice female) receive 10, 8, 6, and 4 points respectively. For monthly and yearly totals, male and female points are combined for each exhibitor. An annual season runs from October's bowl show through September's bowl show.

Note: It was voted that as of the October 2010 only one of the following combinations can be shown at the bowl show per breeder.
1) two single male entries and 2 single female entries
2) one male tank entry, 1 single male entry, and 2 female entries.
3) anything less than the above
