One key projects of the NEFGA is the "Fish for Kids" program that supports the Baker Chery Aquarium Club (BCAC) at Luther Burbank Middle School in Massachusestts. Greg Billings hosts the BCAC Fridays after school for about 45 sixth grade students. That's right, 45! The response has been so good that only 6th graders are presently allowed to attend the club meetings because of the shear numbers. The goal is to first show the members how to care for an aquarium and all of its components and secondly to have them share that knowledge and benefit the schools by maintaining aquariums throughout the two schools in town. Students distribute their young fish to other students interested in the hobby, provide "fish water" to staff to fertilize their potted plants, create pleco caves, silk screen club shirts, design/make aquarium filters and much more. |
